The Himmat Project
The Himmat Project (trans. strength) is dedicated to connecting and empowering women from the South Asian community from back home and abroad, who have endured decades of social injustice and may be victims of domestic violence. Breaking the cycle of dominating patriarchal norms, together this blog will offer resources, an opportunity to share your story, connect women of similar and resilient experiences, as well as offer insight from in islamic perspective to empower women in seeking help and provide comfort in escaping toxic households.

The Alarming Rates of DV in our Community

"South Asian women in the United States are at high risk for intimate partner violence, with 40% reporting intimate partner violence in their current relationship,” (Raj & Silverman, 435).

Women of visible minority group reported experiencing a form of psychological, physical, or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime, since the age of 15 (Statistics Canada, 2021)

Among visible minority groups, South Asian women were found to report 30% of cases if intimate partner violence since the age of 15, in 2018 (Cotter, 2021)
